Originally I was just a landscape painter but in recent years, especially since the birth of my own children, I have begun to enjoy painting children. But I think painting a standard portrait is boring, I prefer painting kids being kids. So here I have collected some my paintings on this theme in a celebration of youth. Join me in this nostalgic look at the innocence, wonder, love, freedom, and adventure of childhood.

How do you figure that. Let me bring to your attention "Greating the sun" girl only, "Hunting Seashells" girl only, "Painting the clubhouse" Girl/boy, "Curiosity" girl/boy, "Birthday Blowout" my daughter, my son, my two nephews and my goddaughter. Not to mention "Summer starts here" which has all ages and both genders. All these displayed here, so I do not know how you can claim I paint only boys. I do tend to paint more boys than girls but remember my theme. "The Memories of Childhood Never Fade" and as a male my memories of childhood are of being a boy. So I tend to paint what I know best.

AKA Secret Readers Original Oil Painting on 11 x 14 Hand Streached Canvas Completed Nov.1, 2009 Reading in secret - I have been wanting to do a painting on this theme for a long time. This is a scene I can really identify with. As a child I would often get so engrossed in some exciting book that I would be unable to tear myself away from it. So I would turn off the lights make a small tent under my covers and read by the light of a flashlight. By reading under the covers, I could read in secret, evade detection from my parents and read well past my bedtime.

"Looking for Minnows" 11X14 Oil on canvas Completed Apr. 4, 2010 In this painting I tried to express a moment of wonder, this child so lost in thought, as he explores his world, and marvels at the creatures that share it. While we can not see the minnows and tadpoles that hold him so captivated, we can imagine them swarming around his legs, disturbed by the giant that has entered their world.

--- Many thanks to the Children at Risk Foundation for permission to use their beautiful photo "Passing Moments...." as inspiration for this painting.... I want to express my sincere appreciation not only for the use of the photo but for the wonderful work they are doing to aid the street children of Brazil. Every child deserves a chance.

"No Swimming" by Les Bryant 2009 18X24 Oil on Canvas Completed July 2009 --- Wow!! are they busted! The temptation to take a dip in the ocean was just too much for these kids. Never mind the no swimming sign. When a policeman shows up, his mere approach scares the swimming boys off in a panic. --- For the police man chasing the boys off is part of the job, but he does it with tolerant humor and a sense of nostalgia as he recalls similar experiences in his own childhood. --- One of my most admired artists is Norman Rockwell, He did a very humorous painting called "No Swimming". I wanted to do one of my own with this classic theme. While the theme is reminiscent of Norman Rockwell the content is my own original composition and style.

You are lucky. Here in the US in most places it is bad taste to let your very young kids go natural. Quite taboo for kids this old. Hence the theme of the kids running away from the authorities. Also you have to consider they were in a no swimming zone. Another reason to run.

Yes, it was totally different in some of the US states. Since the children / adolescents / young adults, even in school and university, had to do sports without bathing suits and therefore swim naked. There are many pages about it on the Internet and also numerous photos. There are also some fake photos.

"Master Blacksmith and His Apprentice Son" by Les Bryant 2009 Hand Painted on 30x20 canvas Mixed medium - Acrylic and Oil --- Completed on Aug. 21 2009 after about 32 hrs of work. --- I really enjoyed working on this painting. In particular painting such complex textiles was quite challenging. I also found the grizzled look of the old man fascinating to paint and quite a contrast to the smooth body of the boy. --- This painting shows Indonesian Master Blacksmith, Pak Gede, and his apprentice son. They are carrying on a tradition of passing down these skills from father to son, which has been going on for generations.

"My Turn" by Les Bryant 2009 --- 16 X 20 Oil on Canvas using Brush and Knife. The title comes from my light hearted interpretation of the action here. lesbryant2 🇺🇸 2011-04-22 16:51
Thank you Web1tracer, that is a real compliment. Though I tend to think of Vermeer in terms of very light paintings, he was famous for putting his subjects against off white walls. I think Rembrant when I think of images emerging from shadow. still it is a great compliment that one of my paintings make you think of an old master work.
web1tracer 🇨🇦 2011-04-23 12:22
Yes Rembrandt was the master of light emerging from the shadows. That really struck me when I saw the Nightwatch live (as opposed to a tiny reproduction). But I believe you captured the tranquility of Vermeer here.
lesbryant2 🇺🇸 2011-04-23 14:07
I vividly remember the day I saw Nightwatch. I was about 13 years old, it was a cloudy day, I went into the room and was admiring the painting, then the sun came out and it almost seemed to come to life. I was so moved by the experience that when I returned home I sought out an art teacher that had been trained in Holand.

By composite, do you mean you used a couple of models, in different positions and created them around the swimming hole, or you watched boys at the swimming hole and recreated the scene later? In any case, your talent is obvious.

"Painting the Club House" by Les Bryant 2010 18 X 24 Oil Glaze over Acrylic Grisaille on canvas. If you look carefully you will see my attempt to inject a little humor into this painting. We don't really know the boys motivation, was the boy being fresh, or was he trying to help the girl reach the top of the door (or is that just his excuse). What ever his reason, he left a hand print on her panties. She did not appreciate the contact as evidenced by the paint smudged slap on his face. This painting was an experiment. Most of the colors you see were the result of oil glazes over an acrylic gray scale underpainting. This is an original composition.

Bath Time - Your Turn Next by Les Bryant 2010 24x24 Oil Painting on Stretched Canvas Completed July 30, 2010 This charming domestic scene was inspired by a stereoscope photo dated 1897. I made many changes to the original B/W photo to make it my own original composition. Part of my "Memories of Childhood Never Fade" series For part of my childhood I lived in a house that had been built in 1902. I have many personal memories of bathing in a claw foot bath tub just like this. Unfortunately my parents never appreciated this antique and disposed of it during a remodel.

The Dog Bath - Who is getting the bath? by Les Bryant 2010 Mixed Medium, Oil over Acrylic 11x14 on canvas This is a small painting of two young boys who have their hands full. They need to give a dog, that is bigger than they are, a bath in flee dip. But the dog has other ideas. Seems that in the end it may be the boys that get flee dipped. It is easy to just take a pretty picture and paint it, but this one is a figment of my imagination. For me this is the most difficult type of painting to do. I do not have a fixed model to start from. Rather it evolved over several weeks, at first just as a jumble of ideas on my computer eventually this emerged. This painting is part of my "The Memories of Childhood Never Fade" art theme set.
web1tracer 🇨🇦 2011-04-24 14:33
Beautiful realistic movement - the resistance of the dog, the boy's attempt to push. The boy on the left is better dressed for it, but it looks like the boy on the right is the one about to take the plunge. :D
lesbryant2 🇺🇸 2011-04-26 12:55
Thanks web1tracer, I wanted to go for a little humor in this one. This one was a real struggle, working with out models is a pain. Since I had to do this one from imagination it lacks the realism I achieve in some of my other works, to me the figures look cartoon like.
web1tracer 🇨🇦 2011-04-26 14:36
No I think the realism is great, especially of the resisting dog getting pushed into such an unusual position. Actually I find this picture more successful than the preceding "bath" picture, which is very serene and pretty but lacks the dynamic movement of this composition.
lesbryant2 🇺🇸 2011-04-27 21:56
Well I try to produce an emotional response with my art. That response might be nostalgia, or a laugh, I might be trying to communicate love or mischief. The goals of "Bath Time, Your Turn Next" was different than "Dog Bath, Who is Getting the Bath?". In the Dog bath I intended to be full of action - action which is bound to result in a funny conclusion. Whereas the other was trying to be nostalgic, capturing a moment of loving care.
web1tracer 🇨🇦 2011-04-30 14:07
I do like the bath picture but everyone looks away. Perhaps it would have provoked a greater emotional response in me if one of the characters looked my way. As for the dog washing picture, action like this can't help but catch attention. This is one of my all-time favorites - by any artist. If I may nitpick, the only thing I might have changed is the sag on the blue shorts - the way if waves up and down is perhaps not totally natural.
lesbryant2 🇺🇸 2011-11-04 17:46
This is one of my least favorite paintings, I had lots of problems to overcome in this one. Working with an unfamiliar medium, a pen I used for the sketch claimed to be acrylic but kept bleeding through, and it is hard working without models. As for the pants feeling nu-natural initially I had planed to have the front of the boys pants caught on the foot of the dog, I thought it would be really funny. But at the last minute thought better of exposing him as it might offend.

18x24 Oil on Canvas - Completed May 7 2011 - Original composition by Les Bryant - - - Original composition by Les Bryant - This painting was inspired by my childhood memories. It seamed like I always needed a haircut, but I could hardly ever manage to get one. My parents would send me off to the barbershop, but there always seemed to be some reason I could not get it cut. Then I would have to face my parents displeasure when I got home. Could I help it if I played to long, and when I finally got to the barbershop it was closed! How about the time I spent most of the money elsewhere, as a result I had to go to the Barber College for a cheep one dollar cut, The student barber took a few cuts and I heard. "Ooops!" He looks around all sneaky like, tells me he forgot something urgent he had to do. He then insisted there is no one else available who could cut my hair, then rushed me out the door telling me to come back some other time. Well my parents were really disgusted by that hair cut and made a new rule "Don't go to the Barber College so you can spend most of the money on other things." I spent the rest of the week with all the other kids laughing about the big chunk of hair missing from the back of my head. - This boy has other problems. He gets to the barber shop just before closing, but he is barefoot, and they won't take him. There is no time to get home and put his shoes on. - Not only is he worried about what his parents will say but there those bothersome signs. Perhaps he is worried about putting his money in his pocket, after all there are pickpockets about. Is he worried about loose women. Wow! This place just does not feel very safe, with those mysterious loose women running around, my goodness what could they be? Are the dangerous? - Well..... He has some money, maybe he will just go by the store on his way home and buy some candy.... - All in fun. - Hope you enjoy. - Les

These two boys ranged far and wide over the country side, catching rabbits and squirrels to add to the dinner table. One day during their travels, they came across a neighbors prosperous farm and saw a field full of ripe watermelons ready for picking. Having caught sight of such delicious fair, the temptation to acquire one was very irresistible to these hungry, thirsty boys. So Frank, the older boy begins scheming on how to liberate one? Collins resisted the idea at first but with arguments from frank and his grumbling tummy he reluctantly went along to help get one of their neighbors melons. Collins being the practical sort snuck up to one of the smaller melons near the side of the field. Frank on the other hand had spied a really big melon in the center of the field. "What a prize! What if we could get that home for dinner" he thought, so he called out to Collins, “Not that one, Let's take the big one!”. Now this was a really huge melon, only with difficulty did they manage pick it, then lift it up to carry between them. As they disappeared into the forest they heard the farmer yelling at them in the distance. In fear the boys picked up their pace. Running along the forest path, barely able to keep the melon suspended between them. They were fortunate to have such a big head start, for the farmer did not bother to pursue the mischievous boys. So what happens when two young boys go running along a dirt path in the woods trying to carry a watermelon? A watermelon nearly as big as the smaller of the boys. A big mess of course, as they topped a hill the melon got away from them. It went rolling down the hill with the boy's in pursuit. Near the bottom of the hill it a tree dead center, KERPLUNK....SPLAT!!! The watermelon split in two, sending out a spray of watermelon bits. So they sat down at the bottom of that hill, next to a small stream. Each boy with a more than ample melon half. They scooping out the heart of the melon with their hands to gorged themselves on what they could of that huge delicious watermelon. When they got home they discovered why the farmer had not pursued them. The framer knew it was "Those Bryant boys", and knew where they lived. He was there speaking to their father. It turns out the farmer was a kindly sort, he knew of their poverty, and was not mad that the boys had taken a watermelon, but he was upset that the boys had stolen his seed melon. Every year he would save the seeds from his biggest and best melon to plant the next year, hoping to improve his crop. He had been caring for that melon like it was his baby! What was he going to do for seed next year? So the boys had to agree, in the future, if they really wanted watermelon, they would pick a small one. Hope you enjoy. Les

This painting was inspired by a Vladimir Zotov photo. The photo immediately made me think of the legend of the pied piper, and how he must have practiced as a youth to be able charm people and animals. So in keeping with that legend I added a mouse in the upper left and I also excluded the motorcycle from my version.

Vladimir Rafailovich Zotov was a Russian writer, playwright, journalist and editor,He's a Genius,But I always(like the rest of my Bolivians countryfolks& our Cuban brothers) Always, always prefer the Real Vladimir(VLAD) Illych Uliyanov(better known as Lenin the giant).I hope you all admire him as well.

The Lark In The Morning Traditional The lark in the morning she rises off her nest She goes home in the evening with the dew all on her breast And like the jolly ploughboy she whistles and she sings She goes home in the evening with the dew all on her wings Oh, Roger the ploughboy he is a dashing blade He goes whistling and singing over yonder leafy shade He met with pretty Susan, she's handsome I declare She is far more enticing then the birds all in the air The lark in the morning she rises off her nest She goes home in the evening with the dew all on her breast And like the jolly ploughboy she whistles and she sings She goes home in the evening with the dew all on her wings One evening coming home from the rakes of the town The meadows been all green and the grass had been cut down As I should chance to tumble all in the new-mown hay Oh, it's kiss me now or never love, this bonnie lass did say The lark in the morning she rises off her nest She goes home in the evening with the dew all on her breast And like the jolly ploughboy she whistles and she sings She goes home in the evening with the dew all on her wings When twenty long weeks they were over and were past Her mommy chanced to notice how she thickened round the waist It was the handsome ploughboy, the maiden she did say For he caused for to tumble all in the new-mown hay The lark in the morning she rises off her nest She goes home in the evening with the dew all on her breast And like the jolly ploughboy she whistles and she sings She goes home in the evening with the dew all on her wings Here's a health to y'all ploughboys wherever you may be That likes to have a bonnie lass a sitting on his knee With a jug of good strong porter you'll whistle and you'll sing For a ploughboy is as happy as a prince or a king The lark in the morning she rises off her nest She goes home in the evening with the dew all on her breast And like the jolly ploughboy she whistles and she sings She goes home in the evening with the dew all on her wings

"Summer Starts Here" By Les Bryant 2014 Completed April 7 2014 Oil on canvas 42x36 full size will be reduced to 38x32 with Gallery Wrap. To cerebrate the approach of summer I decided a beach painting was in order. This is a rather large painting but it was done with a twist, I actually painted it with an extra 2 inches along the border, when the painting is dry it will be re-stretched on smaller stretcher bars so the area you see in gray which actually matches the rest of the painting will be on the sides of gallery wrap stretcher bars.

Your work is contemporary, but has a very, 1950's, Rockwellesque feeling

Thank you, I admire the work of Rockwell, I take that as a compliment.

"Catch of the Day" by LesBryant2 32x38 Gallery Wrap Oil on Canvas completed 2/6/2017 As a kid my grandfather would take me fishing. He warned me to be careful and not catch my self on the hook, so I was always apprehensive and envisioned this happening to me. I can remember breathing a sigh of relief each time I successfully cast my line out without incident. Hope you enjoy. Les Bryant

I laughed and remembered. The exact same thing happened to me in the summer of 1964. The difference was it had a small treble hook and latched onto my cheek and crack. I had to hobble to the picnic table and was humiliated as my sister and friend got it out. Pretty sure I still have a small scar.

"End of the Drought" by les bryant 38x32 Oil on canvas This shows the visible portion of this painting, it was actually painted two inches larger on each side. The extra two inches wrap around the stretcher bars as this painting is intended to be displayed without a frame, as a gallery wrap. About the title I live in southern California. We had a long drought for many years, but this year we finally got a wet spring. Will be nice to be able to water my lawn again. It was really starting to look quite dead. The title also reflects on the fact that this is the third painting I did this year. I had a number of factors conspire in preventing me from doing any paintings since 2014. I feel like this represents an end of my personal drought as well. So nice to be painting again.
