"No Swimming" by Les Bryant 2009 18X24 Oil on Canvas Completed July 2009 --- Wow!! are they busted! The temptation to take a dip in the ocean was just too much for these kids. Never mind the no swimming sign. When a policeman shows up, his mere approach scares the swimming boys off in a panic. --- For the police man chasing the boys off is part of the job, but he does it with tolerant humor and a sense of nostalgia as he recalls similar experiences in his own childhood. --- One of my most admired artists is Norman Rockwell, He did a very humorous painting called "No Swimming". I wanted to do one of my own with this classic theme. While the theme is reminiscent of Norman Rockwell the content is my own original composition and style.

You are lucky. Here in the US in most places it is bad taste to let your very young kids go natural. Quite taboo for kids this old. Hence the theme of the kids running away from the authorities. Also you have to consider they were in a no swimming zone. Another reason to run.

Yes, it was totally different in some of the US states. Since the children / adolescents / young adults, even in school and university, had to do sports without bathing suits and therefore swim naked. There are many pages about it on the Internet and also numerous photos. There are also some fake photos.

Yes, quite true, in my youth when I swam at the YMCA, swimming naked was a requirement. Today people are scandalized by the idea.
