Thank you pjazzy for once again showing just how much proper tailored school shorts can suit boys in their teens. In the UK ,until the 1960s, it was quite normal for boys to wear short trousers and knee socks, just like these South African lads, until they were 14 or even 15 and recently we have seen schoolboys campaigning for the right to wear shorts once again, in summer at least. I think that they should be commended for their efforts!

Nice short trousers. I like that 70s/80s look, when boys' blazers often came to below the shorts. He'd have looked better in knee socks though, further emphasising his smooth bare thighs. I wonder when and where the photo was taken? From the uniform I'd guess him to be a 12 or 13 year old UK prep school boy. It's a shame that they don't still dress like that.

These boys, in 2011, were giving a concert to celebrate the 40th year of the choir, and were given special concert outfits in the style of those 40 years earlier, in 1971. I wonder if they had to be coaxed or if they had no choice.

I know what you mean, but it's all social conditioning, isn't it?. Girls often wear short dresses and show their legs in formal occasions, so why shouldn't boys (show their legs, I mean, not wear short dresses - though that's another story! Maybe with all this gender fluidity, one day...) Also, in many of your wonderful photos the boys' shorts are very short - again, girls often wear them like that, or shorter, but boys tend nowadays not to (although I think I detect a gradual and welcome shortening of the lengths of boys' shorts recently. Indeed they would have thought a boy who came to school in shorts the length they are now very odd!

Although short trousers and knee socks still seem to be fairly common in South Africa and the Anzac countries, most British boys in their early teens these days would probably be horrified if they had to dress like this - which, personally, I think is a pity. They look so smart and, well, appropriately "boyish". I also wonder what the girls think.

Briefly cut short trousers, worn with knee socks, used to be the norm in many European boys' choirs at one time and it is a pity that the tradition no longer continues. Quite apart from other considerations it was a useful and striking way of distinguishing trebles from the older and lower pitched members of the ensemble.

I fully agree about distinguishing the older members. But there were a number of choirs where this didn’t happen, and the older boys, up to 18 and 19 years of age, wore exactly the same as the younger boys, including startlingly brief shorts and long white socks. The sczeczin nightingales were one, I think.

This boy and the one on page 8, playing a recorder, attended a prep school very near to where I lived in the 1980s. All the boys back then wore very short corduroy shorts, with knee socks, all year round, until they were 13 - and very smart they looked too! I knew the parents of two of the day boys and occasionally talked to their sons. I don't remember either of them ever complaining about their uniform. On the contrary, they seemed to like wearing it, even after school (minus the tie of course). I rarely saw them in anything else. Sadly, the school has now closed - but not before capitulating to the fashion for longer shorts in the 1990s, alas!

For sure! I suppose that these boys are pupils at a private school in South Africa but when I attended school in England at a time when the grey short trousers that we wore were no longer than hot pants we couldn't have worn anything else underneath!

Oh..lovely..nice to see teen high school boys (may be 11th or even12 th grade) wearing shorts as uniform and not feeling shy of revealing their thighs and legs. Great job by the school for persuading these boys to be in such short shorts
