Love his little rat tail. Wonder how many times another boy sneaks up behind him and and tugs on it during camp .

Yes true, but I like when parents give their kids a choice, within reason of course.

That I of course, it just not with the tolerance too overdone. Children unless they have "limits" and it is the bad. Most themselves. I think this is true in both the US and here in Europe.

Within reasonable limits and respect of course. Trying to mold a child into what the adult would want them to be. Causes rebellion in the child. Open discussion and communication between child and guardian solves lot of issues.

Working with children for many years. Yes, it is needed discussion between adults and children, I agree with that. However, there are issues which must be a child say no. This is not about reshaping the image of an adult child, but it is a necessity. Otherwise, she becomes arrogant individual who refuses a natural authority. The child must know what is good and what is bad. Rules from living are is ultimately the same for all.

There many different situations to take into consideration, like for instance. The child says, I'm not going to school/I'm not taking a bath/I'm going to wear my pants to my knees/I'm not going to help with chores/ I'm going to put a ring in my nose. These and many more. There is no discussions. It's the rule. You will do what I say. Other things like. Mom I do not want to wear briefs. I want to wear boxer shorts/ I do not want to play football/I do not want to play the violin. Parent says you will wear briefs because father wears them. You will play football because your father did when he was in school/You will play the violin because I played one. Things like this should be open for discussion and the child should have the choice to do those things or not.

Sure - there is no point in talking about such as school, hygiene and so on. There are rules and immutable. It is also true that parents often want their children to reshape his image. This is natural, if a child thinks well (which is fortunately most). There is a need not to confure it with unhealthy fanaticism and exaggerated claims for their children.
