Boys in this region commonly start smoking around the ages of ten or twelve, if they haven't already. There is, of course, no minimum legal age for buying cigarettes in Indonesia. Very few young girls smoke,though.

Bandung is a major city in Java, Indonesia. Indonesia has no minimum legal age for buying cigarettes, and in Bandung practically every male above the age of about ten seems to smoke.

Palembang is in southern Sumatra, Indonesia; this album also contains some photographs from Jambi, to the north of Palembang. Indonesia has no minimum age for buying cigarettes, and it is estimated that about forty per cent of boys are regular smokers by the time they are fourteen; many start when they are much younger than that.
