'Jane, oil on panel, 11-3/5" x 7-1/5"' is listed in the catalogue raisonné for 1980 - I assume this is the same picture.

Text reads: "Laid between brown brittle papers/ their news a dozen decades past/ a drawer not looked in for a life:/ torn, faded photographic face of child in naked strife .../ Print salted, callous Kalos:/ action coarse as paper's graining image/ caught by exposing light./ (An age of substance without thought of dark corrupting fright)./ Who was this girl, her frail form chastely, bruised by beasting man?/ Ill'fed with seed but not of bread,/ was her life a silent secret/ as this picture of forgotten dead?"

Text reads: "If I in rhyme should paint the prism of your youth/ or by my brush, imprison words ... so bind the truth:/ forgive me./ For my poor sense would wish to draw/ the spectre of your love .../ and more,/ attempt to pen the light within/ whose spectrum is unflawed by sin/ (as these fond thoughts that seal our bond and trust)."

"...we shadows, locked in silence/ both victims of the violence/ that our bodies bear;/ yet not a breath disturbs - all grief is held./ For where/ it moulds the mystery of each form/ and shapes its seed/ is bitter now, as bitter born/ (whence by a parent's greed was bred to vice)./ What need then, worth... be life/ when birth is coin perloined by lust:/ betrayal.../ interest torn from trust?/ If this be/ then we who wait:/ the bait with bated breath/ must bare our womb (so soon to mate with/ death...?)/ And after death/ can his arrest release the soul:/ set flight/ the terrors bound by flesh/ to rest, secure... made whole?"

Text reads: "I first saw Tilly on boulder beach./ Lean, lanky child in grub'd rub'd flutter frock./ Seen chasing billows, filling dress .../ So thin those downy arms that downward press/ on cotton cloth three sizes small,/ which rise but quarter down her thighs .../ (Convenient brief to test wild wavelets mingling crest)./ Grey eyes - long lashed, sand hair - short cropped:/ teeth trifle large - but chisel cut./ Chat stopped only for an instant:/ then that smile, what artful ploy .../ but tender./ Trailed garden seaweed, slender fingers scooping moated plot/ round pebble piled crowned castle top./ At times when seeming 'lone she'd discard clinging, modest shift .../ to run and swim in naked skin, sun shimmered, wind flecked goosing limb./ Shout fearless to white waters belly salting/ between arch legs taunting./ Tilly's play grew girlhood's promise ... Broke:/ I never saw her more .../ (Yet hold the memory of a child - that child in store to ease a moment's melancholy)."
