I wrote and illustrated a book called, 'Spartan Boys.' The original whipping scene had the naughty Spartan boys wearing my version of ancient underpants, gartered legs and waist... a none starter, because rubber and fine spun cotton was not invented for another two thousand years... It was a concession to modern censorship of course, the target audience was teen boys and girls. This version is more historically accurate. Boys wrestled, trained and were whipped buck naked.

Simple lines and tones say it all for me. No model wants to pose for hours on end in the nude. Usually, if a drawing is not working in ten minutes, it will never work.

I saw some French movie clips featuring 19th century boys once, it had three short but amusing spanking scenes, the best being a bare bottomed a line up in a corridor. The whipping was brief but the scene has influenced other movie directors... The spanking scene in, 'The General' has the same line up of naughty boys with their night shirts up, the severe school master walking down the line smacking bare bottoms... This is my attempt at the same subject.

More scenes from my school days. I can't remember ever wearing swimming trunks for swimming. My friend and I would always remove our shorts once we got to the bridge, our place of freedom and peace. Then some snotty nosed school girls cycled over OUR bridge and yelled out... "Look everyone, rude boys showing their knickers!" ... Bloody girls!

You are right. It WAS fun between boys. Spanking games somehow made the school punishmenta seem less terrifying. Of course in a spanking game it was de rigeur to have one's bottom bared..something that NEVER happened in the Housemasters office. There were always plenty of willing volunteers eager to undress the chosen victim (who never seemed to protest that much).

A master work by the 19th Century painter, Edger Degas. I've seen the original many times in the 'National Gallery' London. Degas is better known for his dancing girls, but this was done when he was still influenced by, 'The French Salon's, Neo Classical art.' Degas has obviously done his homework, Boys did train naked in the open, girls did tease them because they knew the boys would not have, so called, normal sex until they finished their military training in their mid twenties.

One of the few gallery paintings that depict boys actually embracing in the nude... Playful or affectionate depictions are rare indeed and I wonder if painters and illustrators are actually censoring themselves in an attempt to duplicate the cold, academic, classical style. Boys are not made of polished marble... This artist knows that and paints real flesh and blood boys.

My gang used to go to a place deep in a forrest to swim in the nude. As 12 year olds, it seemed natural to remove our underpants away from puritanical adults. A group of schoolgirls saw us once, it was the only time we were discovered naked in the river. They just stripped down to their vests and school knickers and played leap frog as if they were in a gym. We eventually emerged and mixed with them naturally. Nobody acted or talked silly, we just enjoyed each other's company. How strange would that be these days.

One wrestler wears trunks, one is naked, we see a Greek or Roman villa in the background, so presumably we are watching some ancient sporting spectacle... The artist was half right... Men and boys would have been naked. However, I can just hear some art editor, fearful of full frontal nudity, saying to the artist, "We can't have cocks showing on the cover of this magazine... draw some trunks on him for god's sake."

I found this illustration on my web travels... I retouched it a little to get the tones and colours back. Unlike most modern spanking art, it's well drawn and nicely painted. It also shows the boy's mother as the main disciplinarian. Im sure it was and still is in many families. The boy has been made to remove his shorts and underpants for what some mothers call, "A proper leathering." The belt is a fearful punishment implement that leaves your bottom feeling as if it's been properly roasted... And don't ask me how I know!

Whatever! The artist, Helga Bode, worked in the 1920s and 30s. Do a web search if you want to know more about her and her art.
