The apartment block was full of ladies doing their housework and mum said, "For gods sake, put your shorts on, you're not a kid anymore." That was news to me, I felt like a kid... still do, always will.

Yes... In my new post I redrew the whipping scene with the boy naked, as he would have been in ancient Sparta. Fitted underpants are, as you say, a modern garment. Ancient undies were rarely worn because they were impractical and looked bloody awful... Boys usually wore nothing under their tunics, but you can't paint them that way these days.
