He may not appear chubby by today’s standards for kids, but he definitely is. I was slighlty less fat than him at his age in the eighties and was the second fattest boy in my class ; I was called “chubby” by many other kids.

I love your comment, because it indicates that the perception of “chubbiness” has changed. For me, the first boy is obviously chubby. Not much, I give you that, but I can assure you that he would have been labeled as “fat” by most kids of my generation. However, kids are so much fatter nowadays that such boy can be considered thin by most people. It reminds me of a video on YouTube where two obviously chubby boys were making fun of a third one fatter than them by about 20 pounds : someone posted a comment to notice than the three of them were actually fat, and one of the boys, who seemed surprised, answered that no, only the third one was actually fat. This answer made me smile and melt: these boys obviously lived in a place where there are so many overweight kids that they did not even realize they were chubby themselves. Being chubby was the norm, for them.
