When I went to UK schools in the 50s and 60s, a strict dress code was in force. Regulation 'Gym Knickers' in navy blue, dark green, maroon or dove grey were compulsory, as standard day wear and for PE. some mothers called them 'School Bloomers' but I never heard anyone call them called, 'Panties.' Made of soft pure interlock cotton with little gartered legs, they were called 'Passion Killers' or 'Baggy Knicks' by my sixth form girlfriend, she hated her baggy regulation bloomers, I found them delightful... then and now.
