Ifford HP4 was my choice in the 70's. I bought in 100' rolls to load my cartridges. It was a a very versatile film, I found it would render great skin tones and could be pushed to ASA 1600 with little increase in grain. Incidentally, we boys would not often swim in our underwear but the denim cutoffs would forever to dry; nylon swim briefs ruled the day.

At that time, you wore anything you felt like, even nothing if the spirit moved you. Anyway, I took to Ilford films very early (HP4/5 and FP4). The only Kodak film I like was Tri-X, which, though it had good tonality, had more grain. When they came out with XP series I went to that almost exclusively for my outdoor B & W shots because it controlled contrast so well. All my shots of Sabrina (see that album) were on the XP series.

H&W Control was another favorite film of mine. It is relatively unheard of but used with their propriety developer would produce outstanding tone range and grainless 16 x 20 enlargements. It was actually an Agfa microfilm which with their developer would produce excellent greyscale. The only reason I knew about the H&W film is because I lived a few miles from St. Johnsbury, Vermont where the owners / developers had their home base. .

Believe it or not, I heard of H & W (aye, old photographers, what a treasure lost). I tried it once, couldn't quite get what I wanted, and went back to FP4. I still wasn't completely satisfied however until the XP series came out - which gave me control over my typical high contrast beach scenes. (It was a disaster however if you mistakenly used it in flat lighting). These photos were mostly in FP4, with a few in Tri-X. I also think I used a Leica IIIf (TALK ABOUT OLD-TIMERS!). Anyway, I think the photos, esp. of Butch (the cute dark boy) came out pretty well with ancient technology.

Very nice to be able to discus older methods of photography with a knowledgeable fellow like you. We are now immersed in the new digital age. You inspire me to post more of my B&W photographs,of which I have scanned the negatives. Check my albums, I will post some hiking photographs soon. .

OK good. I suppose I should "follow" you (or whatever imgsrc.ru call it) to keep in touch.

As I will too. I intend to look at all of your albums as time permits; I find your work to be technically excellent and your subject matter a joy to behold. Many remind me of my younger days.

I'm going to add a few more photos to each of my albums; then create a few more swim team albums. I also have to add to my "Citta' di Gaeta" and motorcycle albums.
